Crypto transactions are irreversible — that is the technology's promise and the victim's problem. But 'irreversible' is not the same as 'untraceable': stolen funds move on a public ledger, and that movement, documented forensically, is what freezes, seizes and returns money. Here is what is genuinely possible — and the 'magic' offers that are not.
Sent to a scam platform. Your crypto went to a fraudster's deposit address. Route: trace to the cash-out exchange, freeze request via law enforcement, parallel bank dispute on any fiat legs.
Sent to the wrong wallet. A mistyped address usually means permanent loss — but 'wrong wallet' scams, where the recipient pretends to be support, are fraud: traceable like any transfer to a counterparty.
Wallet drained by a hack. Keys were compromised. Route: rapid tracing before the mixer stage, exchange flags on the destination addresses, and a police report that exchanges will act on.
Transaction hashes, wallet addresses, platform URLs, chats with 'support' — the trace is only as good as its starting evidence.
Alerting the operator can trigger instant laundering; a silent forensic trace done first preserves the freeze option.
Exchanges freeze on documented legal requests, not emails: the trace report plus police report is what moves compliance teams.
If the crypto started as a bank card deposit, the chargeback route may cover the fiat leg; the fake platform itself is likely in our forensic review archive; and our fake-app guide explains how these deposit addresses are run.
Concrete cases from our forensic review archive: an exchange brand whose deposit addresses we trace · an exchange whose impersonators cash out traced funds · a cloned domain whose wallet trail we documented
If it was a genuinely mistyped address, recovery is usually impossible — there is no counterparty to act against. If 'support' gave you an address to 'fix' a problem, that is fraud, and the recipient can be traced like any scammer. The transaction hash tells a forensic analyst which situation you are in.
Trace the deposit addresses to the cash-out point: scam desks convert to clean coins at regulated exchanges, and that is where freezing requests work. File the police report, commission the trace, and act on the exchange within days — speed beats everything.
Real firms: assess before quoting, work on documented legal process, give honest partial-recovery odds and never ask to be paid in crypto upfront. Scams: guaranteed recovery, 'hacked the hackers' stories, urgency and secrecy. The second scam targets exactly this search.
