eToro Broker Review — Is eToro Safe in 2026?

Our forensic verdict on eToro: the real platform is a genuinely FCA-authorised, Nasdaq-listed broker — and precisely because of that reputation, it is one of the most cloned and impersonated trading brands in the world. Here is how to tell the difference.

Our verdict

The verdict: eToro is a real, FCA-authorised firm — the danger is what impersonates it

eToro (UK) Ltd is a real, authorised financial firm. You can verify it yourself in under a minute on the FCA's public register. eToro Group Ltd has traded on the Nasdaq since 14 May 2025 under the ticker ETOR, which means audited accounts, SEC filings, and public-market scrutiny.

The forensic problem is not eToro. The problem is the ecosystem of clone firms and phishing sites — "Etoro SB Limited", "Expotoro", "Tratoro", "PayBack Toro" and endless lookalike domains — that copy eToro's branding, its FCA reference number, and even its Canary Wharf address to steal deposits from people who believed they were dealing with the genuine broker. The FCA and Spain's CNMV have both published formal warnings about eToro impersonators.

If you deposited money with a platform you now believe was a fake eToro, that is not a trading loss — it is a fraud event, and it is investigable. Our scam investigation service traces where the money actually went.

Why us

We've done this before — and won

This is not theory. Our investigators have worked fraud cases end to end, and our clients have seen real outcomes:

  • Money recovered through bank recalls and chargebacks — when clients came to us fast enough.
  • Court judgments against the people behind these platforms.
  • Class actions — when one scammer has hundreds of victims, they can be sued together, and that is often where the real pressure comes from.
  • Regulatory claims filed with the FCA, SEC, FTC and Action Fraud — the paper trail that forces banks and payment processors to act.

Every case starts with a free, confidential assessment. We take on cases we believe we can win — and we tell you straight if yours is one of them.

Regulation

Which eToro entity regulates you — and why it matters

eToro operates through several legal entities. The entity you contract with depends on where you live, and the protection you receive depends entirely on that entity. This is the first thing our examiners check in any broker dispute.

eToro (UK) Ltd — United Kingdom

Regulator
Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Firm Reference Number 583263, authorised since 2013.
Compensation
FSCS up to £85,000 per eligible person; Financial Ombudsman Service for complaints.
Protections
Segregated client money under CASS rules; negative balance protection for retail CFD accounts; FCA leverage caps.

eToro (Europe) Ltd — EEA

Regulator
Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), CIF licence 109/10, company HE 200585.
Compensation
Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund: 90% of a valid claim up to €20,000.
Protections
MiFID II safeguards; segregated client funds; EU leverage caps for retail clients.

eToro AUS Capital Limited — Australia

Regulator
Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC), AFSL 491139.
Compensation
No statutory investor compensation scheme comparable to FSCS; protections come from ASIC conduct rules.
Note
ASIC commenced Federal Court action in 2023 concerning eToro AUS Capital's CFD distribution — worth knowing if your account is with the Australian entity.

Other entities — USA & Seychelles

USA
eToro USA LLC is registered with FinCEN as a money services business; securities products are offered through eToro USA Securities Inc., a FINRA/SIPC member. Following a 2024 SEC settlement, eToro scaled back its US crypto offering.
Seychelles
eToro (Seychelles) Ltd holds FSA Seychelles licence SD076 — a lighter-touch regime. Clients onboarded here have materially weaker protection than FCA, CySEC or ASIC clients.

The practical takeaway: two people can hold "an eToro account" with completely different legal protection. Before you fund anything, identify which legal entity your account agreement names — and verify that entity, by name and licence number, on the relevant regulator's register.

Self-verification

How to verify eToro is genuine — a five-minute check

  • Check the FCA register, not Google. Search Firm Reference Number 583263 on the FCA's official Firm Checker. Confirm the status reads "Authorised" and the website listed is exactly etoro.com.
  • Read the domain character by character. The genuine site is etoro.com. Variants like etorosb.com, expotoro.com, "etoro-login.com" or hyphenated lookalikes are the classic clone pattern.
  • Match the legal entity to your country. A UK resident should be contracting with eToro (UK) Ltd. If your account documents name a Seychelles entity — or no entity at all — stop and investigate.
  • Never use contact details from an ad, email or WhatsApp message. Clone firms cold-call and advertise. If you were approached, use only the contact details published on the regulator's register.
  • Screenshot everything. If anything feels wrong, preserve the site, the emails, the payment receipts and the wallet addresses before the site disappears — this is the evidence trail a forensic investigation builds on.
Clone scams

The fake eToro problem: documented clone firms

These are real, formally warned entities — not hypotheticals. Regulators publish these warnings because victims keep losing money to them.

"Etoro SB Limited" — FCA clone warning

The FCA warned in May 2022 about a clone operating as Etoro SB Limited from the website etorosb.com, fraudulently presenting itself as the authorised firm. The genuine eToro (UK) Ltd has no connection to it.

"Expotoro / Tratoro / PayBack Toro" — FCA clone warning

In November 2023 the FCA warned about a clone cycling through the names Expotoro, Tratoro and PayBack Toro, mixing genuine eToro details with false contact information to harvest deposits.

"ExpToro" — CNMV warning (Spain)

Spain's CNMV flagged ExpToro among unauthorised entities, noting its deliberate visual and naming similarity to eToro — the same clone pattern, aimed at European investors.

Phishing the genuine platform

Even the real eToro is targeted: fake login pages ("etoro-login.com"-style domains), spoofed support emails, and Telegram "account managers" who ask for passwords or verification codes. eToro will never ask for your password by email or phone.

If a "broker" contacted you first, promised guaranteed returns, or pushed you to a site that is almost — but not exactly — etoro.com, treat it as a clone until proven otherwise. If money has already moved, see our scam investigation service — tracing where it went is exactly what we do.

Balanced view

What eToro is not — the honest limitations

A forensic review that only lists positives is marketing, not analysis. These are the genuine caveats, none of which make eToro a scam, all of which matter before you fund an account.

CFDs are high risk

Most retail CFD accounts lose money. FCA leverage caps (30:1 on major FX pairs) and negative balance protection limit the damage — they do not make CFD trading safe.

Crypto is not compensation-protected

Cryptoassets held on eToro are not covered by the FSCS in the UK or the ICF in Cyprus. Regulation of the broker does not extend to protecting the value of crypto positions.

CopyTrader copies risk too

Copying another retail trader replicates their leverage and drawdowns. "Most copied" status is a popularity metric, not a performance guarantee.

Regulatory history

Beyond the clone warnings aimed at impersonators, note ASIC's 2023 Federal Court action concerning eToro AUS Capital's CFD distribution, and eToro's 2024 SEC settlement that scaled back its US crypto offering. Both are public record.

Withdrawal friction is the top real complaint

The most common genuine user complaint is slow or questioned withdrawals and account-verification delays — frustrating, but categorically different from fraud, and usually resolvable through the firm's complaints process and the Ombudsman.

Protection varies by entity

As covered above: an FCA-regulated UK account and an FSA-Seychelles account are not the same product. Verify which entity holds your money before judging what protection you have.

FAQ

eToro review — frequently asked questions

Is eToro a scam?

No. eToro (UK) Ltd is authorised and regulated by the FCA (FRN 583263), eToro (Europe) Ltd holds CySEC licence 109/10, and eToro Group Ltd has been listed on Nasdaq (ETOR) since May 2025 with audited public accounts. What is a documented, active scam pattern is the wave of clone firms — fake sites impersonating eToro to steal deposits. If you were contacted by a "broker" using eToro branding, verify the exact domain and entity before concluding anything.

Is eToro regulated by the FCA?

Yes — the UK entity, eToro (UK) Ltd, Firm Reference Number 583263, has been authorised since 2013 and appears on the FCA register with the status "Authorised". Always verify the FRN directly on the FCA's official register rather than trusting a logo on a website.

Is eToro a publicly listed company?

Yes. eToro Group Ltd completed its IPO on the Nasdaq Global Select Market on 14 May 2025, trading under the ticker ETOR at an offer price of $52.00 per share. As a listed foreign private issuer it files audited accounts and reports with the US SEC.

Is my money protected on eToro?

If you are a UK client of eToro (UK) Ltd: client money is segregated under FCA CASS rules, you have FSCS cover up to £85,000 if the firm fails, retail CFD accounts have negative balance protection, and you can complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Cryptoassets are not covered by the FSCS. Clients of other entities (Cyprus, Seychelles, Australia, USA) have different — and in some cases weaker — protection.

I deposited money with a site I now think was a fake eToro — what now?

Act quickly: preserve every piece of evidence (site URL, screenshots, emails, payment references, crypto wallet addresses), report to your bank immediately if you paid by card or bank transfer, report to the FCA and Action Fraud, and then speak to a specialist investigation service. Tracing where the funds actually went — exchanges, mules, or cash-out points — is a forensic exercise, and the earlier it starts, the more recoverable the trail is. Start here: scam investigation.

How do I check whether a "broker" contacting me is a clone of eToro?

Three steps: (1) search the exact name on the FCA warning list and register; (2) compare the domain character by character against etoro.com; (3) never use the phone number or link the caller gave you — contact the firm through the details on the regulator's register instead. If any of the three fails, treat it as a clone and do not send money.
