No — Wefunder is a real business. But the scam reports around it are under active investigation, and if you lost money to someone using its name, that is exactly what we investigate.

The short answer: Wefunder is real — but read this before you hand over any money

Wefunder is a genuine US Regulation Crowdfunding funding portal — and a brand that OSC batch lists show is being impersonated in Canada These are the facts that check out on public registers — the complaint record is what our review is still working through:

  • Wefunder Portal LLC is a FINRA-registered funding portal (SEC File No. 7-33; parent Wefunder Inc. CIK 0001641389, portal CIK 0001670254) — verifiable on FINRA's registration database.
  • San Francisco-based, operating since 2011/2016; roughly $983M raised across ~3,000 offerings; named by FINRA in 2022 as the largest participant in the crowdfunding space by capital raised.
  • Its one disclosed enforcement matter (FINRA AWC No. 2021071940801, settled May 2022, $1.4M civil penalty covering 2016–2021 conduct) is resolved history — four clean years since.

Checking out is not the same as closed: the complaints against Wefunder are under active investigation, and none of the facts above protects you from a fake. Most 'wefunder scam' searches trace to impersonators, not the platform itself — the ones that don't are the reason we investigate.

One more thing before you deposit: the complaints around Wefunder are under investigation — by us, not by a regulator. “Wefunder Inc.” appears verbatim in the OSC's 11 Nov – 2 Dec 2025 unregistered-solicitation warning list. The listing almost certainly refers to impersonators misusing the Wefunder brand to solicit Canadians — a documented pattern for well-known US platforms — not to the real San Francisco company. If you were approached by a “Wefunder” representative in Canada, verify you are actually on wefunder.com before anything else.

Sort your situation

Real-platform dispute or impersonation fraud?

Both feel identical from the inside. They are fixed by completely different routes — and the fastest way to tell them apart is to ask three questions.

If it is the real platform: your dispute runs through its formal complaints process, then the regulator or ombudsman. Slow, but it usually works. Clone alert, stated plainly: the real Wefunder is FINRA-registered and legitimate; the OSC listing refers to impersonators, and victims of the impersonation should report through wefunder.com's official channels, not to cold contacts.

If it was an impersonator: you were never a customer of Wefunder at all. A clone site, a fake “account manager”, a lookalike domain — the money went to criminals, not to the platform. That is fraud, and speed decides what can be recovered.

The three questions: did you type the official domain yourself, or follow a link, advert or message? Did anyone contact you first? Were you asked to pay a personal account or a different domain? If any answer is wrong, treat it as impersonation — and start here.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Wefunder a scam?

No — Wefunder is a real business: Wefunder Portal LLC is a FINRA-registered funding portal (SEC File No. 7-33; parent Wefunder Inc. CIK 0001641389, portal CIK 0001670254) — verifiable on FINRA's registration database. The scam stories you see online usually trace to fakes borrowing its name — and the ones that don't are part of our active investigation. But read the note above first — the business is real, and so are the caveats.

Is Wefunder regulated?

Yes — the real Wefunder is FINRA-registered (SEC File No. 7-33) and operates under US Regulation Crowdfunding. The OSC listing that names “Wefunder Inc.” refers to impersonators misusing the brand in Canada, not to the registered portal; verify any approach against wefunder.com itself.

I lost money to someone claiming to be Wefunder — is that the real company?

Almost certainly not. Impersonators borrow the name, the logo, even the licence number. The real company knows nothing about it. Keep every message, receipt, URL and wallet address — that evidence is what an investigation builds on.

I paid a fake Wefunder site. What is enough to send?

The domain you actually used, the date, and whether it was a card, a bank transfer, or crypto. Or the name of the person who told you to pay. Or one screenshot. Where the same payment shows up from other people, those files can sit together as a class action. The first look is free.

How do I check the Wefunder site I used is genuine?

Type the official domain yourself — wefunder.com — never follow a link from an advert, email or message. Then check the regulator's public register, which lists the firm's genuine website. If your domain differs by even one character, it was a fake.
